Behavior Analyst Licensure

This information is provided in good faith to applicants as of December 10, 2020.

The Behavior@Simmons program leads to a Master of Science in Behavior Analysis. This program is intended to lead to exam eligibility for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination, and not an individual certificate or license. Some, but not all, states license Behavioral Analysts, with name of license and requirements varying by state. Generally granting of the degree, fulfilling the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) requirements to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and passage of a background check is sufficient for licensure in most states.

The table below provides a state by state breakdown of comparable requirements, including a determination of eligibility for the national certifying exam. This information provided is designed as a baseline determination of whether the program meets national exam eligibility requirements and not individual state specific requirements. Specific state licenses may be more applicable and/or require additional standards. Exam eligibility, licensure requirements, and appropriate pathways are subject to change and may differ based on individual student backgrounds, including coursework taken outside the scope of the program. Students should do their own due diligence and determine the appropriate pathway and license type for themselves.

Practicum: 1000 hours in behavior analysis, at least 75 of which must be supervised. be supervised at least once during each week for no less than 7.5% of the total hours spent in Practicum for each week.
Intensive practicum: 750 hours in behavior analysis, at least 75 of which should be supervised. Be supervised at least once during each week for no less than 10% of the total hours spent in intensive Practicum for each week.
For all, no fewer than 10 hours but no more than 30 hours per week.

Field Experience: One year of full-time supervised experience, or the part-time equivalent thereof, such experience to consist of 1,500 clock hours, in accordance with the requirements of this section. Of such one-year of experience, at least 150 clock hours shall be gained during a master’s or higher degree program’s required supervised practicum or internship, and shall be required for admission to the licensure examination. The remaining supervised experience shall be gained as part of the master’s degree program or following the completion of all master’s or higher degree studies, including all mandated course content.

Curriculum: The program of study shall include a minimum of 45 semester hours of graduate study in standard psychology courses, including courses in academic psychology, statistics and research design, scientific and professional ethics and standards, and a specialty area. Not more than 6 semester hours shall be credited for internship/practicum and not more than 6 semester hours shall be credited for thesis/dissertation.

Field Experience: Supervised training experience shall be a minimum of 12 weeks, consisting of at least 500 hours of supervised training. At least 400 hours of the training shall be in the practice of psychology.
