SocialWork@Simmons is delivered online, so it is important that you have the correct technology in place before the program begins. Before your classes start, you should meet the following technology and equipment requirements:

Computer: You can access the virtual campus, 2SW, and attend classes from a laptop or desktop, PC or Mac. You should be sure to download at least two Internet browsers (i.e., Chrome, Safari, Firefox). Test the platform in various browsers before you begin classes to ensure your experience is satisfactory. Tablets are not compatible with the online classroom; you cannot attend live classes from your tablet or other mobile device.

Webcam: You will need a webcam so that your fellow students and instructor can see you during live sessions. If your computer does not have a built-in webcam, you will need to purchase an external one.

Headset or earbuds: You will be required to use a headset or earbuds when attending your live classes. Headsets or earbuds eliminate background noise and allow for clear communication in the online classroom. Before your first class, be sure to test your headset or earbuds with the computer you intend to use in class to ensure that they are compatible. Reach out to the admissions team if you have any questions about purchasing a headset or earbuds.

Internet connection: Your live classes and your course content will require you to access the Internet. For optimal performance, your upload speed should be ten or more megabytes per second, and your optimal download speed should be more than five megabytes per second. Live classes use a lot of bandwidth, so you will need a strong, reliable Internet connection to attend. We recommend you hardwire your Internet connection using an Ethernet cord for the best possible connection.
