Breast Self-Exams: Why Recommendations Differ

Many primary care providers and leading health care organizations have differing opinions on the benefits of breast self-exams. However, most agree that decisions about screenings should be personalized and based on the patient’s risks and values. These should be balanced with knowledge of the benefits and potential drawbacks of breast self-exams revealed by the most current research and recommendations. Family Nurse Practitioners must remain up to date on changing recommendations and data analysis surrounding breast self-exams in order to have personalized conversations with their patients.
